Two new restaurants, Habibi Mediterranean in Logan and El Castillo in Smithfield, are adding to Cache Valley’s culinary diversity. But while these businesses are taking their first steps, Logan’s Seagull Book is preparing to close its doors.
Habibi MediterraneanHabibi Mediterranean will hold its grand opening at 4 p.m. May 10. The Mediterranean restaurant is opening at 64 Federal Ave, Ste 110 in Logan, the space formerly occupied by Lucky Slice Pizza.
As a special offer for the first day, all orders will receive 20% off opening night.
Co-owner Adam Mamassra said he is opening the restaurant with his sister, Lamis Ali.
Mamassra said he catered events for two years while attending Utah State University and received a lot of feedback encouraging him to open a restaurant. When the space on Federal Avenue opened up, he decided to take the chance.
Mamassra said he has lived most of his life in Logan, but he is originally from Palestine. He said Habibi offers a different side of Mediterranean food than other local options, which he described as more European.
“I’m super excited,” Mamassra said. “Especially seeing friends around and people who have tried the food, it kind of builds that excitement.”
El Castillo
El Castillo Restaurant opened in Smithfield April 24 at 133 N Main Street #91. The restaurant offers Salvadoran and Mexican food, including pupusas, tamales, tacos and burritos.
Owner Martin Castillo said Thursday the restaurant’s first week has gone well. Castillo is from El Salvador and has lived in Cache Valley for six years.
Castillo said he hopes people will come out to enjoy the food and service.
Logan Seagull Book
The Logan Seagull Book at 1114 N Main Street will close May 24. The store is offering various discounts on all of its items leading up to closing day.
Deseret Book announced April 22 it will be phasing out its Seagull Book brands and stores by the end of 2025.
According to Deseret News, Deseret Book President Laurel Day said the decision came because “times and customer behaviors have changed.”
Deseret News said the decision resulted in an immediate reduction in staff, with other staff to be phased out between now and Dec. 31.
The article states the majority of the 200 employees who will be impacted are part-time employees.
Seagull Book was founded in 1987 and purchased by Deseret Book about 20 years ago.
