By announcing his intent to pursue another career, Cache County clerk-elect Jess Bradfield has done taxpayers a favor. The county executive and council may now declare the office vacant and appoint Bradfield’s deputy as interim clerk. Bradfield would be paid as a temporary part time consultant to the county during this interim.

His decision raises the broader question of whether department heads such as clerk, recorder, and treasurer should be elective offices in the first place. Would county government function better if these positions were appointed by the executive and confirmed by the council? Such a selection process could be based on recommendations from a citizens’ screening committee. I suggest a voters’ referendum for the 2024 general election to change the structure of Cache County government. It needs fixing.
