West Side’s golf team upset Grace in the 3A District 5 Golf Tournament for their first district title on May 7 at the Preston Golf & Country Club. They advanced to the State 3A Golf Tournament on May 12-13 at River’s Edge Golf Course in Burley, ID.
“West Side placed 3rd or 2nd in the four meets that were held before our district tournament so we felt we had a chance to go to State but Grace has dominated district play in both boys and girls golf for years,” said Coach Ron Mumford. “The Covid-cancellation year, all the Grace boys were in the 70’s, and were widely felt to be the best boys team in the State - all divisions. Through the years, West Side has supported and cheered for Grace, in part because of family ties. Some of their best players are Titensors and the grandchildren of Wayne and Carolyn Smart.”
Despite Grace’s dominance over the years, the Pirates beat Soda Springs by nine and Grace by three. “An unexpected and exciting finish for sure,” said Mumford. “Mitchell Mumford, Abram Mumford, and Jace Royer turned in respectable scores in the eighties. Jarrett Anger shot an 82, and Jaden Fuller scored the best round of his life - an 81. Go Pirates!”
