As the regular season winds down for several high school spring sports, teams are trying to build some momentum and prepare for the postseason.
Tournaments and invitationals were held in boys volleyball and softball, while two Region 11 baseball teams played non-league games on Saturday.
Sky View hosted the Servin’ up North Side boys volleyball tournament. The two-day event concluded Saturday afternoon in Smithfield. The host Bobcats went 4-2 over the two days of action and finished second. The 5A Bountiful Redhawks (21-3) won the 12-team tournament.
“It was a great weekend,” SV head coach Treva McUne said. “We played the best I’ve seen these boys play all season. It was so fun.”
The Bobcats (18-9) were one of four Region 11 teams to compete at the tournament. Green Canyon (18-9) went 3-3 and finished seventh. West Field (7-18) went 1-5, taking eighth. Mountain Crest (2-20) also went 1-5 and finished 11th..
Following Bountiful and Sky View were Farmington, Riverton, Morgan, Box Elder, Green Canyon, West Field, Hillcrest, Fremont, Mountain Crest and Tooele.
Logan took part in a one-day tournament hosted by 5A Roy on Saturday. The Grizzlies (8-14) went 1-2, but were very competitive in the matches they lost.
SOFTBALL
The Cache Valley Invitational involved four region teams. Most teams played three games.
Region champion Bear River went 3-0. The Bears (25-2) blew out Hurricane in four innings, 17-1, and then blanked Union, 10-0. The final game was a battle as they edged Payson, 5-3.
Sky View hosted in Smithfield and went 2-1. The Bobcats (10-16) lost to Morgan, 5-2, then bounced back to nip Timpanogos, 4-3, and beat a good Stansbury squad, 9-6.
“It was a pretty good day,” Amanda Robinson said.
Mountain Crest also went 2-1. The Mustangs (8-16) beat Weber in five innings, 16-3, then shutout Wasatch, 5-0. Skyridge handed Mountain Crest its lone loss, 8-5.
At Millville, Ridgeline played two games. The Riverhawks (14-13) continue to live on the edge, playing in one-run games. Ridgeline fell to Grantsville, 8-7, then beat Bountiful, 5-4. Kylie Jorgensen had a home run against Grantsville.
Logan was not part of the invitational but did play a game on Saturday. The Grizzlies (16-11) continue to gain momentum as they picked up a win at 5A Northridge, 7-5. Cambree Cooper and Leila Pauni each had three RBIs and hit home runs.
“It went well,” Logan head coach Kim Laing said.
Logan, Ridgeline and Sky View are in action Monday with non-region games. The 4A state tournament begins next Friday at home sites.
BASEBALL
Two region teams were in action Saturday. Ridgeline won at 6A Syracuse, 5-3. West Field picked up a win over Salem Hills, 9-8.
The Riverhawks (20-4), who are the region champions, scored three runs in the top of the sixth that proved to be the difference. Ridgeline had six hits as Cooper Clark had two. Cael Kidman had a triple and scored twice. Two Riverhawk pitchers combined to allow just four hits.
Ridgeline, Green Canyon and Bear River will play non-region games on Monday. Like softball, the 4A state tournament begins this Friday at home sites.
