A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash on State Route 218 near Newton on Thursday. She was 54.
Utah Highway Patrol identified the woman as Jeannette Rigby on Friday.
The crash was reported by witnesses at about 2:37 p.m. A green Toyota was traveling eastbound when it drifted off the road to the right, the Utah Department of Public Safety said in a news release on Thursday. The vehicle continued down the embankment before striking a power pole, causing it to flip and land upside down in an irrigation canal with approximately three feet of water.
Rigby remained submerged for 30 minutes before she could be removed, the release said. The power pole was snapped in half and power lines and communication lines were low hanging.
The roadway was closed completely and opened Thursday evening after Rocky Mountain Power replaced the pole, said Utah Highway Sgt. Cameron Roden.
“To this point it is unknown what caused her to exit the roadway,” the release said. “Investigation is ongoing.”
The Herald Journal will update this story as more information is released.
