The Republican Party has been unfairly “demonized” for its reluctance to accept science. Yet they do have faith in science. After all, they have faith there will be safe food on their table, their cell phones will work, medical professionals will tend to their health needs, and their car will get them to their destination.
Yet there is one group of scientists - “climatologists” - for whom they are dismissive. Why is that? According to sociologists it’s called “tribalism.” If one belongs to the “R” tribe, they must dismiss the reality of human-caused climate change. If one belongs to the “D” tribe, they must accept the reality of a human-caused changing climate.
It causes me to ask the question - which tribe do the military and Boy Scouts of America belong to?
A 2015 a Department of Defense compliance report states:
“Hill Air Force Base applied innovative methods and cutting-edge technologies to remediation sites resulting in significant greenhouse gas reductions and energy savings to meet the objectives of Executive Order 13514…. resulting in annual reductions of 395 megawatt hours, 358,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide emissions, and an outstanding cost savings of $268K.”
The military has long been a national leader in reducing its carbon footprint resulting in a saving of billions of dollars and reduced casualties on the battlefield.
Regarding the Boy Scouts of America, five BSA merit badge booklets - two of which must be considered to become an Eagle Scout - “Environmental Science” and “Sustainability” - offer excellent discussion on climate change and global warming - its human-linked causes, and how to reduce one’s carbon footprint. Three others - “Energy,” “Forestry,” and “Weather” also include sections on human-linked climate change.
Utah is a national leader for enrolling its youth in the BSA with its emphasis on community service and civic action and well researched written resources to guide them. We currently have several hundred thousand youth statewide who are learning about climate change and global warming through the BSA program.
I dare say the majority of our Utah male legislators were Scouts, and many are Eagle Scouts.
The military and BSA are critical components of Utah’s culture - past and present. They have both declared human caused climate change is a reality and provide many examples of how it may be addressed.
