Over the weekend, windstorms in Cache Valley were the cause of multiple issues including a barn fire in Nibley and large power outages on Saturday, Sept. 30.
“The fire started at roughly 8 on Saturday night,” Cache County Fire District fire marshal Jason Winn said. “It was paged out as a barn fire. When fire units first arrived, the barn was fully enveloped. There was another barn next to it that was also involved at that time.”
No people or animals were harmed in the fire. Winn said it took around three hours for firefighters to fully extinguish the flames. Besides the two barns, no other structures were damaged by the fire. Winn noted the firefighters were able to protect two nearby trailers from catching on fire.
“There was a fifth wheel trailer on the south side of the barn that they were able to cool down and protect from the fire, and a motor home that was east of the barn, they also were able to get a hose on it to cool that off so it didn’t catch on fire,” Winn said.
While investigations are still ongoing to determine and verify the exact cause of the fire, there were multiple downed power lines near the barn that are the likely cause, according to Winn.
“Right now, I’ve still got to get a couple more witness statements before I’m going to release what happened,” Winn said. “But there is no doubt about it that they had a wind event which did knock down three power poles on the property, which caused the power outage in parts of Nibley and Wellsville and Mendon.”
Besides the outages caused by these downed power lines, winds also affected power in other parts of Cache County. Altogether, over 5,000 households in Cache County were without power during part of the night.
“We are aware of a power outage affecting 5,130 Utah customers in Cache County. The cause is high winds,” reads a Facebook post from Rocky Mountain Power. The post, originally posted at 7:56 p.m., was updated throughout the night on Saturday. While some households’ power was restored by 12:10 a.m., for others power was not restored until 6:30 a.m. the next morning.
