Work to install a new storm drain on 1000 North near USU’s Maverik Stadium will continue to cause some traffic headaches on Thursday night as the Aggies take the gridiron for their first home game.
Logan Mayor Craig Petersen said there will be “minimal inconvenience” for the Idaho State football game, but he anticipates the intersection of 800 East and 1000 North will be open for the Sept. 29 BYU game, where attendance is expected to be much higher.
“It’s in a very inopportune spot here in this particular time of the year,” Petersen said.
Mark Nielsen, Logan public works director, said a new storm drain is needed after storm runoff last fall eroded pavement on the north side of 1000 North instead of flowing into the gutter. The new drain would take stormwater from just west of Aggie Village and pipe it into the canal around 650 East.
They were hoping to have the intersection opened before USU classes began, but now Nielsen said they are hustling to get the piping installed with new pavement over top before the Sept. 29 football game.
He said he would estimate nearly double the attendance for the BYU game compared to the Idaho State crowd.
“We will have it ready to go in some way by the BYU game,” Nielsen said.
USU Parking and Transportation Director James Nye said they are just working around the construction.
“Obviously it does have an impact on us trying to get people to the game,” Nye said. “But at the same time we understand construction projects have to happen.”
He advised football fans coming from the north end of the valley to take 1400 North to 800 East. For those coming from the south, he recommended taking 400 North to 1200 East.
“We would hope people just kind of avoid the 10th North area,” Nye said.
He said the 1000 North and 800 East intersection is a critical point for football traffic and it would definitely help to have it open in time for the high-attendance BYU game.
“If they have it done we’re going to be singing their praises,” Nye said.
