The window to declare candidacy for Tremonton City Office positions has officially closed, and there are 16 candidates distributed across the five open spots.
Those running for mayor include Lyle Holmgren for reelection, current Councilman Bret Rohde, Alexander Ross, Jed Abbott and Ralph Craven.
The five individuals vying for the two open four-year Council seats are current Councilman Beau Lewis, Bryan Bolingbroke, Norman Kay, Brent Jex and Brandon Vonk. Six declared candidacy for the two open two-year seats, including Kristie Bowcutt, Jami Poppleton, Sara Munns, Wesley Estep and Lillian Auble.
Because of the number of candidates, the city will be holding a primary election. If the number of candidates is more than double the open positions, City Recorder Cynthia Nelson explained, a primary is essential.
“The primary will be on Aug. 12,” Nelson said, “and the general will be Nov. 4. We’ll have voting available here at the city offices and at the fairgrounds.”
Voting used to be held at the Bear River Senior Center, but with the growing population, the city had to adapt.
“We just have so many people that it had to move,” Nelson explained. “The fairgrounds are centralized, and will be used for both Tremonton and Garland’s elections.”
The County will be involved come election day, running the show over at the County Fairgrounds, but the election is largely handled by the city.
“At the County level, we help with the election itself, distributing and collecting ballots,” Box Elder County Deputy Clerk and Election Specialist Lori Purdum said.
Leading up to the election dates, candidates are welcome to campaign via shirts, signs and social media as they please. Campaigning isn’t allowed within 150 feet of polling locations. The Leader will provide candidate Q&As in the coming weeks.
