A Cache Valley man is behind bars after an alleged incident Monday night that, according to police, involved a scooter and a firearm.
Caleb Jordan Bacca, 24, of Logan was driving a scooter in the area of 600 West and Center Street at about 8:30 p.m. when witnesses saw him crash the scooter, pull a handgun and fire at the machine, according to Logan City Police Lt. Brad Franke. Witnesses said the man appeared to be intoxicated. They saw Bacca drive off and told police the direction he traveled.
Police found Bacca at his residence, a trailer in the area of 725 N. 500 West, Franke said, a trailer where other people also were located. Two adults and two children met police outside, and officers tried to make contact with Bacca, but to no avail.
Out of an abundance of caution and safety, Franke said, a SWAT team was called in to help with the situation. Containment was set up and contact continued to be made with Bacca.
“Our goal was to contain the situation and take all the time necessary to resolve it safely,” Franke said. “For several hours we tried to make contact with him, but we received no response. We thought he was possibly passed out because of ingested alcohol.”
Franke said everything was done to end the matter peacefully and without injury or damage to property, a goal that was achieved when, after hours of not hearing any response from Bacca, law enforcement went into the residence to find him asleep due to being heavily intoxicated, Franke said.
The matter ended without further incident at around midnight when Bacca was arrested, taken to the hospital and booked into jail.
“It was a little weird,” Franke said. “But we’re so grateful it was able to be resolved safely for Caleb, for everyone else who lives at the residence, for the rest of the community and certainly for all of our officers.”
