Team Rubicon, a nationwide disaster relief organization staffed mostly by military veterans, showed up Saturday and Sunday to clear snow from the roofs and walkways of Montpelier residents.
Coordinating with a local organizer, seven men and women showed from as far west as Boise and as far south as St. George to knock out a list of jobs for Montpelier folks who had requested help.
Melissa Piercy, the team leader from Logan, coordinated the volunteers from a makeshift command station at county fire station #14 in Montpelier.
Piercy said that snow removal is a new task for this bunch. “We do everything from fire mitigation, chainsaw work, muckouts, a lot of flood relief...the snow aspect is new.”
The team split into two groups and worked their way down the list, prioritizing the homes of the elderly and disabled.
Volunteer Marshall Bom said some jobs would take ten minutes, and others several hours. “Whatever it takes to get it done, we’ll do it.”
Team Rubicon was founded by veterans following the Haiti earthquake in 2010. It has since grown to include 150,000 volunteers and has performed more than 1,100 relief missions. Learn more at: teamrubiconusa.org.
