A week after it was announced the Aggies were crushing it in the classroom, they are also doing quite well in the community service department.
It was announced late last week that Utah State Athletics finished at No. 13 in the NCAA Division I Helper Helper Top 25 for community service and engagement during 2024-25 academic year. The Aggies spent 4,147 hours in the Logan and Cache Valley community. According to USU, this equates to $144,274 of economic impact to local communities.
Six USU programs were ranked in the top 10 in their respective sports categories for volunteer hours. The programs included men’s tennis (No. 2), women’s tennis (No. 3), men’s basketball (No. 5), softball (No. 7), women’s basketball (No. 7) and women’s soccer (No. 10).
“Utah State student-athletes continue to display their impact in Logan and the Cache Vally community, volunteering over 4,000 hours of community engagement opportunities,” USU Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau said in a press release. “Our impact in athletics extends beyond competition in games, creating a well-rounded student-athlete experience.”
The student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) spearheaded USU’s volunteer efforts. The group represented all 16 NCAA Division I varsity programs at USU and totaled 741 service hours, including 139 individual commitments across 23 events.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALLOver the past few days the Aggie women’s basketball team has added two international athletes.
Late last week, USU head coach Wes Brooks announced the addition of Andjela Marojevic. She is a 5-foot-10 forward from Vrbas, Serbia.
“Andjela is another player who fits our position-less style of play by being able to play the 2-, 3- and 4-spot,” Brooks said. “She has a motor that never stops, which will allow her to excel in our system in transition and in the half-court attacking the rim. She is a feisty defender who loves to pressure the ball and does not mind doing the dirty work and doing whatever it takes to win.”
Marojevic most recently played for ZKK Partizan 1953 Beograd in Serbia. Competing in the WABA and the Serbia-1 ZLS, Marojevic appeared in 37 games and averaged 8.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest. She scored in double-figures in 20 games for Partizan and was named to the Eurobasket.com WABA All-Newcomers Team after the 2024 season.
Prior to Partizan, Marojevic played for ZKK Vrbas Medela for four seasons where she started her basketball career, winning two regional championships and twice being named MVP. She also led her hometown high school team to both a regional and international championship. Marojevic also helped the team twice qualify for the national championship.
She has also competed for Serbia in the U20 Women’s EuroBasket and European Championships, helping the team to a fourth-place finish in the European Championships. Across 14 combined contests in the two tournaments, Marojevic averaged 7.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
On Monday, Marina Asensio signed with USU. The 5-8 guard is from Sabadell, Spain.
“Marina is an efficient combo guard who will provide us with leadership experience and maturity,” Brooks said in a press release. “She is an elite playmaking guard and one of the most efficient 3-point shooters in the country. She also brings NCAA tournament and postseason experience to our team.”
Asensio joins USU after playing the past season at Western Michigan, starting all 30 games for the Broncos and earning all-MAC honorable mention honors. She tied for the team lead with 13.6 points per game and ranked fifth in the conference with 4.9 assists an outing. Asensio also added 3.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game for Western Michigan.
Before her year with the Broncos, Asensio spent two seasons at South Florida, appearing in 60 games for the Bulls. As a sophomore, she appeared in 31 games and averaged 1.8 points, 1.7 assists and 1.3 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per game. She also played in both of the team’s NCAA Tournament games that season.
For her career, Asensio has shot 38.1 percent from the field and 34.2 percent from 3-point range on 3.0 attempts per game from behind the arc.
She brings a wealth of international experience, having played point guard during the summer of 2024 for the U20 Spain Women’s National Team in the U20 European Championship. Asensio also played for Spain’s U18 National Team in 2022 at the FIBA European Women’s Championships, helping the team to a runner-up finish in the tournament.
Asensio played at the club level with Segle XXI in Spain, averaging 10.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in 25 outings.
