The Bear Lake girls golf team delivered a gritty performance at the 4A State Golf Tournament held May 12–13 in Buhl, earning a well-deserved third-place trophy.
Leading the charge was Adie Slivinski, who capped off a strong showing with an individual sixth-place medal.
“The girls were pretty confident going in that they could bring home a trophy,” said head coach Rick Saunders. “But they put so much pressure on themselves that they played pretty tight on the first day.”
Despite the nerves, the team finished the opening round within the top four. Still, they weren’t satisfied. Determined to improve, the team set a goal Monday night to climb at least one spot in the standings — and they delivered.
On Tuesday, the Bears shot 32 strokes better than their first round, launching them into third place. Saunders praised his athletes for their grit and composure.
“They did what they needed to do,” he said. “Adie definitely carried the team, placing in the top 10. The top ten golfers were really strong, and Adie was with them all the way.”
In addition to Slivinski’s standout 6th-place finish, Brynlee Birch placed 13th, Claudia Johnson 14th, Giuli Saxton 20th and Kortlynn Skinner 22nd — rounding out a strong team effort.
With three players from the state squad returning next year and a promising group of sophomores in the wings, the future looks bright for Bear Lake golf.
“We’re returning some great players next year,” Saunders said. “We’ll be as strong a team as we were this year. They just need to play a lot of golf this summer to improve their games.”
On the boys’ side, sophomore AJ Hunt also made a mark, finishing 22nd overall.
“He really started to understand what he needs to do to get better,” Saunders said. “I think he will be a strong player next year.”
